Comments

This Mealy Amazona was seen in the 50 meter tall cliff of red clay which extends nearby the Tambopata river and Research Center, in the Madre de Dios province of Peru. The clay is used by the parrots to neutralize the alcaloids which are present in the unripe young seeds. In addition, a socializing function has been ascribed to the reunions of thousands of parrots of about fifteen different species which takes place before they decide to move to the clay lick. Note the yellow tail and the broad orbital ring of this Amazona.
